Italian Rant

Hello!
This week I thought I do a tune that was playable on the standard three row chromatic nyckelharpa and the moraharpa. There might be a few of these coming up over the next little while. :)
So this week we have The Italian Rant. It's in Playford's Dancing Master, but is a tune dating back to the start of the 1600s from Italy. (Oddly enough!) Enjoy!

Rutebilen

Hello!
This week I chose to do a tune that I taught at Halsway before I started doing the #tunefridays. I dug it out to teach this week so here is the freshly filmed video! It's the run up to a very busy December, so no time for fancy video work!
Enjoy!

Älgknappenpolska

Hello!
This week we have a natty little polska as #tunefriday. It's playable on the säckpipa and also on the kontrabasharpa. The title translates as Elk Button - so it could be about a button made from elk horn.... or maybe it's about something totally different.... like eating too much mousse and having to undo your buttons. Which ever seems more plausible! (Sorry to all the vegetarians.)
Enjoy!

Gånglåt i Sorg

Hello!
This week we have the saddest tune of all time, Gånglåt i Sorg after August Strömberg. I chose to play it on the pipes and then swapped out the two pipe parts for nyckelharpa parts to make it into a #tunefriday.
Enjoy!

Stingo

Hello!
This month I'm on tour with a show called Wind in the Willows - I'm sure you've heard of the story. :)
You can find out more about where we're on tour on the GreenMatthews website. This is one of the tunes from the show - a Playford dance tune that keeps coming back in the show. I'm playing my oktavharpa (cello pitched nyckelharpa) for the show and this has to be one of my favourite bass lines. (Amongst quite a few others). So - enjoy both the tune and the trio version! I'm still using my iPhone to capture this video - but should have my normal camera back soon!
:)
Vicki
PS Yup - the audio was recorded as I filmed. Video on my iPhone and audio into logic. :)

Elegy

Hello!
This week's #tunefriday is an unusual one. Filmed at the Halsway Manor Harpas at Halsway Nyckelharpa Weekend 2017 it is a tune that Jonny wrote for me many years ago. It was actually written for double bass, but once I got my cello pitched nyckelharpa (oktavharpa) it was obvious that it was meant for this instrument! It is quite playable on a standard nyckelharpa. My oktavharpa is tuned with a D string, but this won't cause any problems for C tuned harpa players.
Download the dots and the piano parts in pdf format. I ask only one thing - if you perform it I'd like to hear it! Film it, record it, but play it and then send it on! (I just want to hear it!)

Sticky G&T

Hello!
I'm a little behind with my videos because I left my camera at Halsway Manor. So I'm going to have to work hard to catch up again! This week the tune is a tune that I wrote as a five note beginner tune, but it's taken about 6 months for me to get to grips with it and decide that I actually really love it! So here is Sticky G&T. (It's a long story!)
:)
Vicki

(The bottom title says G major - it shouldn't - it should say G minor!! I need to change that!)

Klockstapelvalsen

Hello!
I've just got back from Sweden where I went to the Byss-Calle Stämma. Byss-Calle has been such a part of my life for the past year that I wanted to go and honour him in his town of Älvkarleby. As I arrived I saw the big looming clocktower, but it wasn't for about 5 minutes that I realised that this was indeed THE clocktower that Byss-Calle made the bet about. He bet that he could write a polska and a waltz before the clocktower was finished. Of course he won!

So I had to make this tune my #tunefriday for the week! Two videos, one (relatively) slowly and one in front of the clock tower! Enjoy!

Midsommarn

Hello!
It's midsommar in Sweden! So this week we have a tune called Midsommarn (Midsummers). Enjoy!
It's quite possibly a silverbasharpa tune, but I don't have one to be able to ascertain that. Either way - drone C and sometimes G, all the time!
Glad Midsommar!

The Japonica Jig

Hello!
This week it's the time for a jig. The Japonica Jig. The name comes from the the plant Kerria Japonica - pretty much the only plant we can identify in the garden (a reflection of our arboreal skills, not the number of plants in the garden).
Enjoy!

Tongue in Cheek - A Polka

Hello!
We've just been to Russia and although I wrote this tune before we went it suddenly occurred to me that it has a lot of influence from the music we'd been working on for the trip. So it was the perfect time to use this as my #TuneFriday. The name refers to a certain tongue biting incident that we had recently in Sweden, there was lots of blood and a trip to A&E, but everything is fine now! This tune is best started slowly, get faster and finish with an Oy!
Enjoy.

Kontrabasharpa Polska

Hello!
This week I went to the Pitt Rivers Museum to visit the 1898 kontrabasharpa that they have stashed away. It was an amazing visit and I was quite blown away by the instrument. Of course I took along the camera and made a little blog. Although the instrument isn't playable I took along my own kontra and this tune. It's yet another Calle Svankvist, but you can't just go around calling all tunes Polska efter Calle Svankvist, can you? So this one is called Kontrabasharpa Polska to mark the occasion.
Enjoy.

Polska efter Calle Svankvist

Hello!
This week it's back to good old safe polskas. A kontrabasharpa tune, so I've recorded it on kontrabasharpa and also on the standard three row. I've played it in two keys. The original and also in a key that you can use the C drone. Of course, if you have a D string, then use the D drone in the kontra key. Or if you have a C string and you're feeling daring, change your C to a D. Or even better - get a kontra, then you can have the A drone. :D
Ensemble version included today too.
Enjoy
:)

Election Woes

Hello!
I'm generally not a particularly political type of person, but I always make sure I get out there and vote. Recent political developments though have been really upsetting and today felt like the right day to get this tune out there and into the nyckelharpa world. It wouldn't be my first choice of tune name, but I guess John was even more upset by todays politics than me.

The only political message here is - whoever you vote for, just get out and vote!!

A cracking little tune called "F**k the Tories" written by the wonderful John Spiers.  It could have been written for the nyckelharpa it fitted so well under the fingers! I usually try to stick to traditional or self written tunes, but this one just had to be played.
:)

Finnskog efter Jan Andersson

Hello!
It's #tunefriday again. Time flies round! Here is a tune that I learnt up at a Scandi weekend in Tideswell, so I tend to call this the Tideswell Finskog - but I do know that the proper name is - Finnskog efter Jan Andersson. This is a Finsskog - this means that it's got a really cool rhythm.
Eight quavers in the bar arranged into three beats like this:
123 123 12
The video explains it. Enjoy.
I love this tune. :D
:))

PS I fixed the wrong dots!

Äppelbo Gånglåt

Hello!
This week we have the very first tune I learnt on the nyckelharpa. You'd think it was a simple tune, but no I jumped straight in on this tune. I remember standing in my sisters bedroom in her flat in Sweden picking my way through the notes. I had no idea how to hold the harpa properly and just the dots for this tune in front of me. It's a timeless classic and I think we all know it!

Calle's Påsk Gånglåt

Hello!
Happy Easter! It's Good Friday, so we need a #Easter #Nyckelharpa #TuneFriday. So this is Calle's Påsk Gånglåt. (Although I just call it Calle's Gånglåt in the video). It's a tune for Moraharpa, Kontrabasharpa and of course Nyckelharpa. :D
Enjoy!

Fanteladda

Hello!
I love this little tune. It's great for starting to reach up slightly higher. Not much - but just enough to start heading up above first position. The trick with this one is the rhythm. There are three beats in the bar, but they are uneven. There are 8 quavers worth of notes and those quavers are divided up into three beats like this: 123 123 12

Watch the video - it'll become clearer there!
Enjoy
:)

One for His Nob

1814

Hello!
This week I'm posting up a video that (unusually) isn't me. :) This is a great tune that I learnt from the playing of Peter Hedlund on his CD with the Sea Stallions. The off beats in the B part are my interpretation, everyone seems to play that bit slightly differently. :D  There are lots of great videos of this tune out there so I thought I'd post a couple of those up. We're on the road today, but I'll see if I can grab a version of it in our encore this evening!
Enjoy!
:)

P.S. My version is now up and running, it's at the bottom!

Härjedalsschottis

nh-hc

Hello!
This weeks #tunefriday is Härjedalsschottis. We love this schottis and it crops up all over the place! It's in The Whispering Road as our riding tune and this week it cropped up on the BBC in Holby City (Series 19 Episode 13). We were engaged as musical extras and a dance was required. So what better tune to choose as a fast exciting dance than this one!
Enjoy!

This tune is the soundtrack to the behind the scenes video. It maybe that this can only be viewed in the UK. In which case, the instagram clip below shows the tune nicely. :)
